Dairy Queen targets Middle East expansion

The iconic American quick-service restaurant chain Dairy Queen (DQ), renowned for its soft-serve ice cream and diverse menu offerings, is setting its sights on the Middle East, with a particular focus on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia (KSA). Established in 1940 in Illinois by John Fremont McCullough, his son Alex, and Sherb Noble, DQ has become synonymous with innovative desserts like the Blizzard, introduced in 1985. Over the decades, its Grill & Chill concept, which blends hot food such as burgers, chicken strips, and fries with its signature ice cream treats, has cemented its position as a global leader in quick-service dining.

A Robust Foundation for Expansion

As part of Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, Dairy Queen enjoys a stable financial base, enabling it to pursue ambitious global expansion strategies. Speaking to Restaurant Business International, Brandon Guthrie, Director of International Development for the American Dairy Queen Corporation, emphasised the Middle East’s potential as a thriving market for QSRs (quick-service restaurants). With a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) exceeding 14%, the UAE and Saudi Arabia represent promising opportunities for the brand.

The region’s youthful, globalised population is a key driver of growth. In Saudi Arabia, 85% of fast-food visits are made by consumers under 45, and 63% by those under 35, aligning perfectly with DQ’s target demographic. This young, dynamic audience craves international flavours, making Dairy Queen’s mix of hot meals and signature desserts an ideal match for their tastes.

The Middle East: A Strategic Opportunity

Both the UAE and Saudi Arabia have cultivated pro-business environments, characterised by flexible economic policies and significant efforts to attract foreign investment. This makes them prime markets for Dairy Queen’s expansion. Guthrie stressed the importance of finding the right local partners, stating:

“Find the right partner, and everything works out.”

Partnerships are pivotal for navigating regional business landscapes and ensuring sustainable growth. Dairy Queen’s strategy reflects a deliberate and measured approach to expansion, prioritising long-term success over rapid deployment.

A Dual-Focus Approach to Growth

Dairy Queen’s Grill & Chill model, combining hot food and dessert offerings, enables the brand to appeal to a broader audience. This dual-focus strategy is particularly well-suited to the Middle Eastern market, where group dining plays a central role. By extending its menu beyond desserts, DQ positions itself as a versatile dining destination for all meal occasions, from snacks to full meals.

This approach has proven successful in other markets. For example, the DQ Blizzard & Burgers concept in China has paved the way for significant growth, with plans to open 180 new restaurants by 2034. This blend of ice cream and hot food underscores Dairy Queen’s ability to adapt to diverse consumer needs and cultural dining habits.

The Role of Franchising in Expansion

Guthrie also highlighted the mutually beneficial nature of Dairy Queen’s franchising model:

For prospective franchisees, Dairy Queen offers a clear roadmap to success, focusing on strategic partnerships and targeted market entry. By fostering collaboration and aligning interests, the brand ensures a win-win dynamic that benefits both parties.

A Promising Future for Dairy Queen in the Middle East

Dairy Queen’s entry into the Middle East is not just a business decision but part of a global trend toward exploring diverse, high-growth markets in the QSR industry. The brand’s strong portfolio of ice cream products and hot foods, combined with its association with a credible parent company, positions it to thrive in the region.

The Middle East’s young and fast-growing population, coupled with increasing demand for international dining experiences, creates a fertile environment for Dairy Queen’s expansion. By leveraging its iconic offerings and partnering with experienced local stakeholders, DQ is poised to become a dominant force in the region’s QSR landscape.

In choosing to invest in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Dairy Queen reaffirms its commitment to innovation, quality, and strategic growth, ensuring its legacy as a beloved global brand continues to flourish.
